No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We shall rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party urged an urgent pause in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these vital projects.
