Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and so-called "progressive" policies represent an grave risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not societal but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a sobering picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by eighty-seven percent, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the American figure. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, largely due to breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus only fourteen in Europe.

This gap raises a pressing question: In the race for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two between the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. The EU has yet to establish a genuine capital markets union, a factor that caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided regulation hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a service under one regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with stigma, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to propose substantial change. Key analyses on European competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses considerable advantages: skilled human capital, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost productivity by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in global economic relevance.
