Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" observation after England suffered a loss in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had stayed in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a daunting target of 435 runs.

This means, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's drought in this country to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

This series will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also won in eleven days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good team. It was inevitably hard coming here to face them. They were the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced some really good knocks. It is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
